Channing Tatum has his moves… Good moves by the way in this entertaining movie that deep down has no substance at all. With the absence of Soderbergh and McConaughey, bringing back the magic of Mike was not an easy task. While the first one had story and it was not just a mere raw stripper’s movie, this sequel fits perfectly in this category. Yes, it’s a bit entertaining, mostly for women… The hot guys dancing and taking clothes off may seem an appealing idea but besides that there’s not much to mention about this movie. Without fire, soul and attitude, Magic Mike XXL tries hard, that’s for sure but it goes home empty handed.
Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, “Magic Mike XXL” finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways. [Synopsis by Warner Bros.]
So if you’re a girl with a dying wish to see hot dudes dancing and taking their clothes off in a movie that looks like a massive strip show, Magic Mike XXL is like a huge candy shop and I rest this case with that. The fact is that Channing Tatum had some ups and downs in his career and has always find way to shine on the screen but in this case…. Well this is a big no-no, even though is the best thing in the whole movie. First they decided to come up with a not so decent excuse to ditch some of the characters of the first movie and then they begin this journey towards a big strippers’ convention to show their goods. There were several moments in which Magic Mike XXL looked like a stripper version of Pitch Perfect 2. Hot dudes dancing, enchanting crazy and hysterical girls in big competitions… And then all of a sudden, Elizabeth Banks appears and I was like “Really? You gotta be kidding with me!”… Seriously there’s nothing besides this last journey of dudes. The characters are bland and there’s nothing interesting going on in it.
As a guy who ended up enjoying the first Magic Mike, mostly because its pleasant story, this movie was a huge drop down even though it was what I expected it to be. There are no interesting conflicts, there’s no emotion and the attitude is almost inexistent. Magic Mike XXL has almost no content for a 2-hour long movie… There’s no attachment with the characters and the second half of the movie is nothing more than just a massive party for women… A useless sequel that ends up messing with the quality of the first movie. For women this may be a treat after a shopping day but, ultimately, Magic Mike XXL lacks energy and style, suffering from that terrible disease that it’s sequelness. Nope ladies, there’s no magic in this Mike.
