Kung Fury (2015)

  • Directed by: David Sandberg

  • 30 Minutes

Probably one of this year’s biggest surprises that deserves to be seen by everyone and that is available on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bS5P_LAqiVg)! Kung Fury is a short independent film filled with amazing action sequences that features the most unusual set of characters such as Triceracop, Barbarianna, Thor, Hoff 9000 and Adolf Hitler. Following the style of 80’s action cop films, Kung Fury follows the story of a martial artist cop in Miami who decides to travel back in time to kill the worst criminal of all time, Kung Fürer Adolf Hitler and his Nazi army that is threatening Miami’s safety.

Filled with great jokes and quotes, Kung Fury is a B-series movie with top quality visual effects (at least in the amateur films genre). A proof that with a tiny budget it’s still possible to gather support from thousands of fans worldwide and to build a pleasant story that managed to surprise me a lot. Kung Fury is an action packed short film with 80’s style special effects and a really cool look with videotape effects and some cool elements from 80’s technology. The battles are surprising for an amateur film and it’s impossible to not laugh during the funniest moments. From references to 80’s movies to the great quotes, there’s a lot of stuff going on in this 30-minutes short film.

With so many potential out there it’s quite hard for the distributors to support movies like this one which makes Kung Fury’s Kickstarter campaign a big hit, proving that there’s market for this type of movies. Even though the dynamic of the movie is not that constant, the great moments of the movie are good enough to keep the viewer interested in a plot that has a bit of everything, including “unnecessary” product placement and an amazing song by David Hasselhoff, “True Survivor”, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTidn2dBYbY) that is addicting as hell. Funny, quick and action packed, Kung Fury has a bit of guilty pleasure material and a great style! So, if you have a tiny bit of free time to spare, give a chance to this movie.
