After the return of the Muppets to the theaters, Disney tried to seize the best out of Jim Henson’s lovely characters. The succesful formula of the 2011 movie was a great way to show that the Muppets were still capable of bringing joy to everyone. When the trailer for this movie was released my expectations were really high because I really liked the 2011 movie and I couldn’t wait to see if this movie was that good. After the US release, the bad critic reception left a clear message that the magic of 2011’s “The Muppets” was not present in this new film. Although everyone said that this new film was weaker, I decided to watch it as soon as possible. Written and directed by the same man behind “The Muppets”, “Muppets Most Wanted” stars Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, Tina Fey and lots of special guests.
After the huge party that occurred after the Muppets regain their theater, they want to think in new ways to improve their show. Dominic Badguy, interpreted by Ricky Gervais, tries to influence them to start a world tour as part of a plan of Constantine, the world’s most evil frog, to become the greatest thief of all time. If you’ve seen the trailer already, than you know that the only difference between Constantine and Kermit is a black dot. After losing the support of his friends due to Dominic’s apparently pleasant ideas, Kermit decides to go for a walk and after being jailed, Constantine impersonates him to use the “Muppets’ World Tour” as cover for his evil plan. While Sam the Eagle and Inspector Jean Pierre Napoleon are following the wrong way the clues that are left on purpose for them, Constantine and Dominic have everything on their side to be successful. But thanks to Walter, Animal and Fozzie, Kermit has the chance to stop Constantine from stealing the crown jewels.
Compared with the 2011 film, “Muppets Most Wanted” has less energy and enthusiasm and the musics are also less catchy but it was still capable of making me laugh a bit. Some of the scenes were a bit childish and some of the effects were kind of weird. My girlfriend kept saying to me that the story looked a lot like “Nation Treasure” (which I’ve to admit that it’s true) and there were times I felt that the movie had too many special guests. Famous people kept appearing from everywhere like James McAvoy and Chistoph Waltz and all together looked a bit messy. But the old gang is back and it’s always a pleasure to watch Kermit, Miss Piggy and Fozzie. Watch it with your family and I guarantee you that you’re gonna have a good time. Ty Burrell was a really funny cop and his moments on the screen were definitely the best ones.
Funny and filled with music, the new Muppets film is less energetic but it’s still capable of giving you enough reasons to laugh. With Ricky Gervais’s accent always present and the every Muppet doing their best, “Muppets Most Wanted” is not a great movie but it’s still capable of bringing back some of the magic of the 2011 film. With Ty Burrell making funny jokes with a French accent, “Muppets Most Wanted” will make you laugh a bit for sure.
